the Hale Street Bridge

WHY?

 4 good reasons:

1. Lots more through traffic means traffic sewers and freeway by stealth

Pushing more traffic through the inner south just shifts existing congestion from the northside. The result will be a 'traffic sewer' which will block up and lead to a freeway through South Brisbane and Woolloongabba. More...
2. Serious health and safety impacts - especially on children and the elderly
More traffic means even more air and noise pollution for areas where levels are already dangerously high. Children are particularly vulnerable to the hazard of fine particulate emissions. Pedestrian and cycle safety will also fall as motor vehicle traffic volumes increase. More...
3. Destruction of neighbourhoods and communities
As the major streets clog up with the traffic generated by the Bridge, the safety and amenity of our residential streets will be destroyed by 'rat running' drivers. As well, the Southbank cultural and education precinct will be cut off from West End by those choked, polluted major streets. More...
4. Wasteful misuse of ratepayers' money
The Hale Street Bridge is part of the massively expensive TransApex project. Cost blowouts on all aspects of TransApex threaten to bankrupt Brisbane. Council should spend our money more wisely, not waste it on transport solutions discredited last century. More...

What's the SOLUTION?

World class public transport network + pedestrian and cycle connections
This would simultaneously solve traffic congestion problems and dramatically reduce both the health risks, and the serious environmental dangers of greenhouse gas emissions and global warming.
