Traffic KILLS communities

Hale Street Bridge: Unliveable communities

What is the Hale Street Bridge proposal?

The Lord Mayor wants to build a toll bridge across the Brisbane River beside the William Jolly (Grey Street) Bridge. This new road bridge would link Hale Street in Milton to Cordelia and Merivale Streets in South Brisbane.

The problem: Unliveable communities

When Cordelia, Merivale and Vulture Streets clog up with all the extra traffic generated by the Hale Street Bridge, drivers will begin rat running through inner south suburban streets to avoid the gridlock.

This will mean higher levels of noise and air pollution and lower levels of pedestrian and cyclist safety in our residential streets. As well as being less pleasant, it will be more dangerous for all of us, especially children and the elderly.

As well, the Cordelia-Merivale 'traffic sewer' will physically divide South Brisbane the way Stanley Street divides Woolloongabba. This will be bad for residents and businesses alike, and will make walking and cycling more unpleasant, difficult and dangerous.

The adverse impacts on the South Bank cultural, educational and recreational precinct (including the Parklands) will be particularly severe, as it becomes cut off from West End shops and cafes by endless streams of noisy, polluting traffic.

Government and private investment in the expanding South Bank precinct is very high and continues to grow (e.g. Millennium Arts, major new commercial and residential construction projects). And the precinct is a major international tourist attraction and a big generator of tourist dollars. To threaten the viability of all this seems like economic lunacy!
